Cooking with spice can seem a bit daunting — especially if spicy foods weren’t a part of your plate growing up. Drawing inspiration from three cultures that approach cooking with spice in very different ways, here are three easy recipes to start a flavor fire in your mouth.

(Recipe originally from The Lemon Bowl.)

THAI COCONUT SOUP

Sambal oelek is a ground chili paste that adds a kick to this soup.
(Recipe originally from My Recipes.)

CHINESE GENERAL TSO’S CHICKEN

Red pepper flakes, garlic and ginger team up to bring a bit of fire to this meal.
(Recipe originally from Dinner, then Dessert.)
